Another tale from Mark Lawrence set in the world of Abeth. Overall, I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the Book of the Ancestor series, but I think that’s largely because Nona Grey was such a force of a character that it’s really hard for any new characters to measure up. Yaz is tough, smart and easy to root for, however, and she carries this story on her shoulders really well.
The grim world of the ice is outlined in clear detail, as is the dark and dangerous underground world in which Yaz finds herself early in the book. It’s eerie, tension-filled, and kept me turning pages. There appears to be three different love interests vying for Yaz’s affections – though the romance subplot is minimal – which felt a bit odd and busy and made it hard to really work out which I (or Yaz) liked best. This is a strongly written world with interesting characters, and I’m definitely keen to see where Lawrence goes next with the story. ⭐⭐⭐ from me
